Chiron’s mountain: why Pelion smells of herbs

Long before it was a holiday coast, Pelion was a pharmacy. In the old myths this green mountain was home to Chiron – the wise centaur who knew every healing plant on these slopes and taught medicine to Asclepius and Achilles. Whether or not you believe in centaurs, the herbs are real: the mountain still grows wild sage, oregano, thyme, and the famous sideritis, “mountain tea”.

That is why every guest who arrives at our door is met with a pot of it. It is the simplest thing we do, and the most Pelion. Over the next few posts we will share the plants we pick, how we dry them, and the little rituals that come with each one.
